The history of Trainwreck
Trainwreck’s known history is mostly a set of attributed stories: Weedmaps reports an 1980s Emerald Triangle emergence via the Seedsman blog, while Leafly and Weedmaps recount different explanations for the name.1,2 The record does establish later labels, a documented child relationship and exact-name lab results, but not an original breeder or date.3,4

Why the name is not settled
Leafly reports two explanations: growers allegedly grew it among a train wreck in Arcata, or the plant’s sprawling growth suggested one.2 Weedmaps gives a Humboldt-region train-crash legend and another account in which the name refers to a rapid mental effect.1
Neither page supplies a primary contemporary record for the event, breeder or naming decision. Accordingly, the guide reports the accounts rather than selecting one as fact.1,2
What the record can establish
SeedFinder documents many later commercial uses of the name: 20 Train Wreck strains from different breeders.5 Leafly documents Pineapple Express as a Trainwreck × Hawaiian cross, establishing one specific family relationship without resolving the original Trainwreck’s origin.3
The lab record is also a label record, not a genetic audit. It comprises 248 exact-name flower tests dating 2015–2024, after excluding named variants, non-flower products and duplicates.4
